Half square triangles (HSTs) were one of the first patchwork blocks I learnt to make. They are easy to make and the design is really versatile. I have used HSTs in many different projects including bags, cushions, table runners, pouches and quilts. One of my absolute favourite quilts is my Firebird Quilt designed in 2017 for my younger daughter. It is made completely from half-square triangles and is a firm favourite in my home (see picture above).

For ideas on how you can use HSTs have a look at my Pinterest Board. Next week I will be sharing a quick HST Baby Quilt to make.

In the following video tutorial, I demonstrate how to make the half-square triangle block. I also show you how to chain piece them to speed up the construction process.

I have created a chart to guide you in what size of square to cut to end up with trimmed half square triangles of specific dimensions. There is a downloadable version at the bottom of this blog.  Good luck making your HSTs!.  Gill x
