I am relishing working on the project for the GillyMac 2021 Spring Virtual Retreat. It is such a nice bright piece and just what is needed in the current climate. The Spring Virtual Retreat Project is a beautiful applique table runner based on a log cabin block. It is designed using two base colours. The colourful log cabins are combined with clever curved piecing. I have gone on to add simple bright applique flowers to this base. Finally, I will cut wavy lines into the outer edges before they are bound. I am only part the way through sewing the sample today, however I thought you would enjoy seeing the progress so far.

GillyMac Spring Virtual Retreat Colours & Design of the Spring Virtual Retreat Project

I want the runner to look like a strip of Spring on my table so the the two base colours I have chosen are green and blue. However, you could get really creative with colour. For example, if you have a colour theme in your kitchen, dining room or maybe your crockery why not use that?  I thought about making a black and white version with shocking pink flowers. Wouldn’t that be smashing? Maybe that’s what I will make up during the Retreat as we sew together. I have designed placemats which can be made as well – or even instead – and this pattern will also be included in the Retreat pack.

Key Skills Being Taught on the Retreat

I enjoy improv sewing and have created my log cabins in this manner. If that is not for you, then there are foundation pieced and ruler-based options as well.  During the Spring Virtual Retreat the participants are able to practise (or learn) a number of skills. These include improv piecing / foundation piecing / ruler-work, curved cutting and sewing and raw edge applique. Furthermore, I will be teaching the participants how to create consistent and symmetrical wavy edges for any sized projects and showing them how to bind curves with ease.GillyMac Spring Virtual Retreat

Save the Dates

The Retreat takes place on the weekend of 26th & 27th March and it will go on sale on Friday 29th January from the shop on my website.

It is really nice to be making this in the middle of the Christmas rush. A dash of calming sewing is perfect at the moment. It hasn’t been an easy year for anyone and it has been awful for many. This is a nice, fresh project which I hope will inspire you to sew with me again. Right … I must get on now and sew on the flowers and finish it! 🎄
