Description
Come and create your own little stitched horizon!
In this workshop you’ll learn how to build a layered textile landscape like the pieces shown above — glowing skies, rippling water, textured hills and lively stitched grasses. We’ll play with simple curved piecing, applique, free-motion and hand stitching to bring your landscape to life. No art-quilting experience is needed — just curiosity, a love of colour and texture, and a willingness to experiment. Throughout the day you’ll see live demos, get step-by-step guidance, individual support, and lots of encouragement to explore your own palette and ideas. You’ll head home with a finished artwork and a bundle of techniques you can use again in quilts, wall pieces and gifts.
Full kit packs are available (see below) and must be reserved at the time of booking.
This class is ideal for confident beginners who sew, and for intermediate stitchers wanting to explore landscape composition and surface stitching in a creative, playful way.
What We’ll Make
A finished 10″–14″ textile landscape, ready to frame or bind — perfect as a gift or a beautiful addition to your own wall. Bring a landscape or photo that inspires you, and you’ll design your own composition and colour story. I’ll demonstrate layout ideas, fabric selection and finishing techniques so your piece feels cohesive, expressive and gallery-ready.
What You’ll Learn
- How to plan a mini landscape: composition, horizon placement and scale
- Creating layered strips and curved seams for water, hills and fields
- Raw-edge applique and fabric collage for grasses, reeds and flowers
- Thread painting and free-motion quilting to add texture, depth and movement
- Easy finishing and mounting techniques so your piece is ready to display
Materials to Bring
- A selection of quilting cottons — Moda Grunge works beautifully, as do hand-dyed or batik fabrics for skies, water and land. Scraps are perfect (at least 10”/25 cm in one direction). Bring a good mix of colours you love!
- A piece of wadding at least 16”/40 cm square (or larger if you prefer), plus cotton or calico backing fabric the same size
- Threads in a range of tones for top-stitching; small trims or embellishments (fringe, beads, etc.) if you like; any embroidery or perle threads you already have
- A domestic sewing machine capable of free-motion quilting (or a walking foot for straight-line quilting). You’re welcome to hand-quilt your landscape — or use one of my school machines if needed
Full kit available for £25 — includes wadding, backing fabric, a curated fabric pack and use of my threads.
